"Uriel was made of the same stuff that a great commander grows out of" (company commander Yarom).
Lieutenant Uriel Peretz, the oldest son of Eliezer and Miriam Peretz, school principal in Givat Ze'ev, was killed during battle in Lebanon on November 25th, 1998, 22 years of age.
The story of Uriel was revealed on television, because a week before he was killed, he asked his mother Miriam to take a photograph with him. Miriam refused. Her heart told her something bad was about to happen. In the last pictures of Uriel which were taken by his sister Hadas, Uriel laughed and said: "mom is worried about me because she thinks something bad is going to happen to me…".
Uriel was born in Sharem-El-Sheich, Ofira, where he spent his childhood until the evacuation of Yamit in 1982. It was from this period that he absorbed his love for nature, trips and the sea. This is also when he acquired his hobby- Diving. After the evacuation, the Peretz family resided in Givat-Ze'ev, near Jerusalem. As he grew, it was clear to him that his life would be attached to the army, and so he went to study in the pre-military boarding school for commanders, "Or-Etzion". Upon finishing his studies, Uriel enlisted into the "Golani" patrol company. The "Golani" company was the one thing he was striving for his whole life. After finishing the regular training course, he was sent to an officer training, seeing his destiny in the army as an officer. At the end of the course, Uriel said to his friends: "We were not elected to be officers for no reason, we are worthy of it. We will change this state whether we wish to or not".
Upon finishing the officer's training, he had become the commander of a patrol squad, in the 51st regiment. On November 24th, 1998, Uriel headed a squad of 15 soldiers into an ambush to be held in Lebanon. During the walk, between five and six explosive devices were activated.
